We have conducted sensitive research projects in highly volatile and dangerous provinces, providing a comprehensive view of evolving—and often unstable—conditions. AREWO researchers are able to operate in some of Afghanistan’s conflict-prone areas because we prioritize collaboration, the development of local capacities, and the establishment of enduring community-level relationships. For instance, our work with peace councils has granted us access to conflict records, enabling us to map shifts in conflict patterns and link them to broader regional or national dynamics. Our operations cover all the provinces relevant to this research (Uruzgan, Nangarhar, Badghis, and Kunduz), as well as Helmand, Kandahar, Kunar, Bamyan, Daykundi, Herat, Baghlan, Farah, Ghor, Logar, Paktia, Paktika, Khost, and Parwan; we maintain communication networks with influential figures and local governance structures across all these locations.
